HIS EXCELLENCY PENGIRAN SANGGAMARA DIRAJA MAJOR GENERAL (RTD) PENGIRAN HAJI IBNU BA'ASITH BIN PENGIRAN DATU PENGHULU PENGIRAN HAJI APONG

His Excellency Pengiran Sanggamara Diraja Major General (Rtd) Pengiran Haji Ibnu Ba'asith bin Pengiran Datu Penghulu Pengiran Haji Apong held the post of Deputy Minister of Defence from 1986 until 24th May 2005. Born in Bandar Seri Begawan (previously known as Brunei Town) on 20 January 1942, His Excellency began his career as an army officer when he joined the first ever recruitment for the Brunei Malay Regiment as an officer cadet back in 1960.

Upon his graduation from the Federation Military College Malaya, His Excellency was assigned to various positions within the Brunei Malay Regiment (now known as Royal Brunei Armed Forces). In 1977, His Excellency was seconded to the Palace as Aide-de-Camp to His Majesty The Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam. His Excellency was promoted as Brigadier General and thereafter Major General and continued his tour with the Royal Brunei Armed Forces until his retirement in 1986.

Married with four children, His Excellency was bestowed his first royal title as "Pengiran Datu Penghulu" in 1973 and as "Pengiran Ratna Indera" in the following year. In 1977, he was bestowed again to his present title "Pengiran Sanggamara Diraja". His Excellency is also Member of Privy Council, and currently the Adviser to the Ex-Soldiers' Association of Brunei Darussalam and the Vice President of Brunei Darussalam Olympic Council.

Among the many local awards for His Excellency's distinguished services are "The Most Gallant Order of Pahlawan Negara Brunei (First Class)" and "The Most Distinguished Order of Paduka Seri Laila Jasa (Second Class)".
